One Small Tug for Girl

Sometimes Becca’s developmental milestones are huge and memorable. Other times they occur without much notice. Especially now that she has passed the 2 year mark, I can be so busy managing her emotions that I don’t always notice the huge leaps that she is making. Today was one of those days.

As usual, we had a full Saturday schedule to attend to and as usual, we were running behind. So, I was hurriedly dressing Becca. I quickly changed her diaper, pulled on her pants, put on her t-shirt and then began to add a sweater. As I was twisting and turning her body, I remember being struck by how trusting she was as I moved her to and fro. Although she sometimes initially protests at being changed, once I manage to pin her down, she is usually pretty compliant and extremely passive, until today.

For the first time today, she really assisted in the dressing process. As I was fishing around for her sweater’s armhole, she reached around and placed her arm in the sleeve. She then used her other arm to pull the sleeve back and spread the fingers of the sleeved hand to free it watching in wonder as her hand emerged. Right before my eyes, Becca was realizing that she had the capability of putting on (and taking off) her clothes. She then spent the afternoon practicing how to put on and take off her sweater, again and again and again.

I don’t think it will be long before Becca will be insisting on dressing (or not dressing) herself. I will definitely keep you posted!

He’s 8 Months Old Already?

John Patrick has just recently turned 8 months old. I am still in a state of disbelief. Where did the time go? But I do have to say – he is more fun every day. Here are all the cool things he is doing:

1.) Sings off-key very loudly (a wonderful skill I passed along to him)

2.) Crawls backwards

3.) Transfers toys from one hand to the other

4.) Attacks my face. No kidding, he literally attacks it. He grabs my hair and pulls my face to him and tries to bite my lip.

5.) Bounces on his dad’s lap until he does ‘the horsey’. (You can probably tell already who the boss is in our house.)

6.) Plays with a rubber ducky in the bath

7.) Makes word sounds like ‘maaaaa’ or ‘blaaaa’

8.) Eats EVERYTHING – loves anything at all, any fruit, any vegetable. He’s not one to turn down food (Please refer to picture above.)

9.) Gets really excited when he see me or his dad and looks for us when he hears our voices

10.) Plays in sandboxes (his favorite)

Happy 8 months my chunky monkey!!!

My Real-life Video Game

Following Zelda

It can sometimes feel as if I have stumbled into my own Zelda Universe (The Becca Quest?). Unfortunately, I do not have much control over which direction my princess will run off to next.

Everything Educational Thursday

Jen and I would like to introduce “Everything Educational Thursday.” The idea started because I have been posting about Becca becoming Bilingual and had decided to post something about language development (and specifically bilingual language development) each week which would naturally turn into discussions about her reading/writing in English/Spanish. Since both Jen and I have a teaching background and are currently working in the education field, I thought it might be fun to post things with an educational twist. Since we both have done research on the latest ‘best practices’ and trained teachers in them– why not pass this info on to the ‘first teachers’ — the parents?

So, this will be “Everything Educational Thursday.” We might post about an educational toy we’ve discovered or the ways that we incorporate education into our lives. For instance, since Becca was an infant I have been singing a phonics based alphabet to her (“baby lamb, baby lamb a a a– based on Open Court) and that is something other parents may not have thought to do.

I also hope that people will contribute ideas in the comments or create their own “Everything Educational Thursday” and link back to us.

Let the education begin 🙂
