Amelia Bedelia

There is something about being a parent that brings out the Amelia Bedelia in me.

Amelia Bedelia and the Surpise Shower

When Becca was about 9 months old she had a slight fever.  Since this was her first fever and I wasn’t sure what I should do, I called her doctor.  After explaining Becca’s symptoms, the nurse suggested I try giving her a  vapor bath.  Fortunately, I had a bottle of  Johnson’s Soothing Vapor Baby Bath on hand (thanks to a thoughtful baby shower gift) so I figured I would try that.

Johnson Vapor Bath

After preparing the bath (with warm water)  as suggested and placing Becca in the bath, I could see that it really seemed to help Becca.  She seemed to be relaxing in the tub and her stuffy nose seemed to be clearing up.

After toweling Becca off and before placing her back in her clothes, I thought I would check her temperature one more time.  I was shocked to discover that her temperature had increased by 2o!  I immediately called back Becca’s pediatrician’s office and spoke with the nurse.  I explained that I had just given Becca the vapor bath as suggested which only resulted in a higher fever.  I could hear the audible silence on the phone as the nurse posed for a minute.  She then very carefully asked, “did you place her in a warm bath as instructed on the bottle?”  When I said, “Of course, I did!” (didn’t she think I could read directions?) There was another pause and she said, “I think the warm water temporarily increased Becca’s temperature.  Wait another 1/2 an hour and take it again.”

Sure enough, 1/2 an hour later, Becca’s temperature had miraculously decreased by 2o and I felt just a little silly.  I thought about calling to tell the nurse this but then realized she probably wouldn’t have been as surprised as I was.

What Amelia Bedelia moments have you experienced as a parent?  Or is there another character from a book (or movie) that you identify with?
